In 2023, we were invited to help Romsey School with a sci-art collaboration that they were undertaking with Network Rail, South Western Railway, The Romsey Station and local artists The Colour Factory for a project to raise awareness and improve safety around the train station which is used by many of the school's students. We took microscopes into the school for the students to use to generate images from natural and man-made items from around the station and tracks which had been collected by Network Rail staff. Selected students then came into the BIU to collect further images using our more sophisticated instruments, including scanning electron and confocal microscopes.
Together with The Colour Factory, the students imagined the creatures that lived below the tracks and incorporated them into the microscopical images. These were then used to create "porthole windows" into this imagined world which have been permanently installed within the foot passage under the tracks at the station. .
