Nature and Biodiversity Community Hub

The Nature and Biodiversity Hub is a community of local groups, university staff and students in Southampton who have a keen interest in nature and biodiversity. The global decline in species and ecosystems leading to environmental degradation have prompted many to act and raise awareness on the importance of biodiversity. These themes overlap with wider issues such as climate change and sustainability. A great way to get involved is to start locally.

The Nature and Biodiversity Hub was launched in 2017 to inspire a greater appreciation of nature and biodiversity in the public, especially young people and community groups.

The Hub includes community organisations in Southampton and as far as the New Forest and Winchester, and university students and researchers.

We host a range of interactive events and activities. These include engaging, nature-based games including our most popular, Biodiversity Blockbusters. In addition, community and university Hub members get involved by sharing their research/knowledge at Hub events through posters, games or other interesting activities.

Communities are passionate about their surrounding environment and play an important role in local issues. The Nature and Biodiversity Hub aims to encourage this by:

If you have an idea, project, piece of research or would like to be actively involved in helping nature and biodiversity locally we would love to hear from you!

How to get involved

We are always seeking new members with knowledge/interest in nature and biodiversity. To become a BioHub member and be added to our mailing list, please email communityhubs@soton.ac.uk .

Sustainable Development Goals

The University of Southampton's vision is that by 2030, sustainability will be a part of everything the University does: our individual behaviours, how we work together and how we make decisions for the future. This is key to achieving our mission of changing the world for the better.
Sustainability and resilience are embedded in all the work of the Public and Community Engagement Hubs, powered by partnerships.
  • Members of the Nature and Biodiversity Hub have collaborated on numerous projects and activities from spreading awareness to actively increasing local biodiversity and fighting the effects of climate change.
  • Nine organisations that are members of the Nature and Biodiversity Hub exhibited at Science and Engineering Day 2025 sharing their messages and activities - including building bat boxes and bug hotels to take home with over 5,000 visitors.
  • The PCE Hubs also work closely with the Southampton Green Network and the Southampton Climate Action Network.
  • All are events in 2024 and 2025 have been catered by Eazy Tz Meals, a local social enterprise creating healthy, affordable meals from surplus food, and Communibakes which supports local charity Communicare in Southampton. And by working with local social enterprises Cross Culture Hub and Feed the Community Program, we've had zero food waste at all our events.
