Faculty culture

The Faculty of Medicine fosters a culture of trust where colleagues and students feel they belong and have the support they need to thrive

Equality, diversity and inclusion

We all benefit from the opportunity to work in a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment, responsive to our individual needs. Equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) is essential for delivering excellent education and research.

Collaboration and consultation is a core part of our Faculty strategy. We work with students, staff and external organisations to support our EDI environment. This network brings together student and staff working groups with a shared interest.

This all results in a Faculty rich in EDI representation across its schools.

I am proud to support bringing these groups together. It ensures we maintain momentum against the background of barriers when supporting EDI engagement and capacity. I look forward to supporting our fantastic students and colleagues to build on these achievements.

Our latest activities

The University of Southampton’s Faculty of Medicine has been awarded the Athena Swan Gold Award, recognising our sustained commitment to equality and inclusion.

Gold is the highest level of recognition awarded through the Athena Swan Charter and is given to institutions that can demonstrate outstanding and measurable progress in advancing gender equality. The award was conferred in September 2026 and is valid until September 2031.

Managed by Advance HE, the Athena Swan Charter is a globally recognised framework that supports universities and research organisations to advance gender equality, transform culture and create inclusive environments.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for both the University and the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty becomes the first at Southampton to achieve Athena Swan Gold status. It reflects 15 years of commitment from staff and students to promoting gender equity and driving positive cultural change.
