Support while you study

At Southampton, we welcome you into a supportive community of researchers. As part of our doctoral community, you’ll have the opportunity to build relationships, attend specialist events and share your research.

Training workshops and courses

Doctoral study is a learning experience, and we have an extensive training programme to support your development as a postgraduate researcher (PGR).

By taking part in our workshops you’ll:

  • develop your personal and professional skills
  • learn how to communicate your research and the significance of your work
  • develop and refine your career plan
  • enhance your employment prospects

Our PGR Development Framework will help you understand the key areas in which you need to develop your skills. You can start booking your place on our courses as soon as you join us.

Subject based support

Our Faculties and Schools also host subject-specific opportunities such as research seminars to help your development.

Research group seminars are a great way to share work, receive feedback and practice your presentation skills in a friendly environment.

Doctoral community

As a PhD researcher at Southampton, you’ll be part of our vibrant and diverse research community.

There will be regular opportunities to meet your fellow PhD students, from our monthly coffee mornings to dedicated initiatives like our PhD peer mentoring scheme.

We also have specialist networks for our PhD students, such as our PGR Parents and Carers Network and the PGR LGBTQIA+ Network.

Events for PhD students

We host regular PhD events throughout the year.

Our postgraduate research poster showcase, Three Minute Thesis® University competition, and Doctoral College Awards are just some of the ways we celebrate the many achievements of our postgraduate researchers.
