Module overview

Modern engineering demands the ability to predict the behaviour of complex materials and structures efficiently and accurately. Learn advanced numerical techniques used to analyse the specialist engineering problems encountered in research and industry. In this module, you will explore advanced solid and structural mechanics concepts, techniques for capturing nonlinear behaviour and advanced constitutive models for different materials. You will then undertake increasingly sophisticated finite element analyses using commercial engineering software, investigating complex structural behaviour, developing more advanced simulation strategies and strengthen your ability to interpret and validate numerical results. Particular emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate modelling approaches, understanding the assumptions behind advanced analyses and developing the professional judgement needed to produce reliable engineering predictions. By the end of the module, you will be able to undertake advanced finite element analyses of complex engineering systems with confidence, preparing you for professional roles involving simulation-led design, structural analysis and engineering research in a wide range of fields.
