About this course

This 4-year MChem Chemistry lets you study chemistry to master's level. In your final year you’ll complete an extended research project that leads to a master’s qualification, known as an integrated master’s degree.

Chemistry plays a central role in solving many of today’s major challenges, from climate change to the treatment of disease. This flexible chemistry master’s programme allows you to tailor your studies to your interests, with options including:

  • advanced chemical biology
  • medicinal chemistry
  • natural product chemistry
  • stereoselective reactions
  • sustainable chemistry
  • computational chemistry

You’ll work in our refurbished laboratories and incorporate modern environmentally responsible chemistry practices that are used in industry.

We’ll provide you with support and training so you can make and analyse your own samples.

In your final year you’ll take an extended research project in one of the following:

Whichever option you choose you’ll gain specialist experience and transferable skills to support your career.

Southampton is a research-active Russell Group university. You’ll learn from inspiring academics whose research directly informs your course. Their work includes advancing battery technology for cleaner energy, designing drugs for hard-to-treat cancers, and using digital modelling in the fight against infectious diseases. They’ll share their expertise and enthusiasm with you in lectures and seminars.

When you graduate, you’ll be ready for a career as a professional chemist. You’ll also have transferable skills to work in other sectors.

We regularly review our courses to ensure and improve quality. This course may be revised as a result of this. Any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Find out why, when, and how we might make changes.

Our courses are regulated in England by the Office for Students (OfS).
