Entry qualification equivalencies for German students

Find out the German equivlants to the grades and academic qualifications required to study with us in the UK. These will depend on what level of study you're applying for.
 

You will also need to meet English language requirements and have your student visa in place.

If you want to take an undergraduate course with us but do not yet have the qualifications needed to apply, we may offer a foundation course that will enable you to qualify and secure a place. 

The German equivalents for their entry requirements will depend on which of these one-year intensive introductions you apply for.  

They include: 

Most of our undergraduate degrees take 3 years to complete full time and award a bachelor’s degree in the field you study.

To study with us at undergraduate level, you need Abitur (Zeignis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife), with a minimum grade dependent on which course you're applying for:

  • an overall grade between 2.2 and 1.4, and
  • at least 12 or 13 out of 15 in advanced level (Leistungskurse) subjects or subjects relevant to the undergraduate course you choose

Alternatively, we accept one of the following, with the minimum grade or score dependent on which course you're applying for:

  • UK A levels with grades from BBB to A*AA, or
  • an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of between 30 and 38 points

Overall equivalency grades:

  • A*AA: 1.6 or lower
  • AAA: 1.8 or lower
  • AAB: 2.0 or lower
  • ABB: 2.1 or lower
  • BBB: 2.3 or lower
  • BBC: 2.5 or lower
  • BCC: 2.6 or lower
  • BCC: 2.8 or lower


Individual subject equivalency grades:

 A*:

  • 14 out of 15 in the Leistungskurse, or
  • 1.5 in the Abitur

A:

  • 13 out of 15 in the Leistungskurse, or
  • 1.8 in the Abitur

B:

  • 12 out of 15 in the Leistungskurse, or
  • 2.3 in the Abitur

C

  • 11 out of 15 in the Leistungskurse, or
  • 2.8 in the Abitur

The OnCampus pre-master's programmes prepare international students for studying at the master’s degree level. They take place over 2 semesters and focus on study skills and research methods.

They will help you improve your English language skills and will secure you a place on your chosen degree if you complete the programme successfully.

To apply for a pre-master's programme, you need:

  • English language skills from 5.0 IELTS or equivalent (with no single element less than 5.0)
  • a minimum academic requirement of 3.49 out of 5

Our postgraduate taught degrees involve more advanced study and usually take 1 year, depending on the course. Degrees awarded include master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas and certificates.

To apply, you need one of the following:

  • Bachelor
  • Magister Artium
  • Diplom
  • Erstes Staatsexamen

Depending on which course you apply for, your minimum grade requirement will be:

  • first class UK degree equivalent, with a grade of 1.59 or lower
  • UK 2:1 degree equivalent, with a grade between 2.0 and 2.5
  • UK 2:2 degree equivalent, with a grade between 2.51 and 3.49

To study for a PhD or research degree with us, you need all of the following:

  • a Bachelor, Magister Artium, Diplom or Erstes Staatsexamen, with a UK 2:1 degree equivalent of 2.5, or lower
  • a master's degree with merit (a grade 2.5, or lower)
  • a strong research proposal

Degrees completed in Germany must be accredited, of from universities accredited by, a German accrediting body.
