Earth Observation provides a bias-free, accurate method for monitoring and evaluation. This forms the basis of my PhD project, supervised by Booker Ogutu and Jim Wright. Now, delving into novel training set creation and deep learning for highly accurate detection of small-scale mines from Earth Observation data, I will be completing the first detailed temporal study into the effects of formalisation on small-scale mining in Ghana, generating a multi-criteria framework for classifying formal from informal operations and generating methods for quantifying progress along the formalisation timeline for small-scale mining.
