From lab bench to bedside
In a quiet corner of our University, something extraordinary has happened at the intersection of chemistry and biology. Here, research isn’t just about the moment of discovery: it’s about taking ideas from the laboratory bench and turning them into new therapies that can change lives.
“Curve Therapeutics all began with a vision: to take cutting-edge chemical biology research to directly benefit patients,” says Professor Ali Tavassoli, Co-founder of Curve Therapeutics.
“I’ve always wanted to use what we do in the lab to help people who are unwell and either make them feel better or give them more time with their loved ones.”

Ali and his team have created a platform to make and test millions of molecules called cyclic peptides, which have the potential to become innovative medicines, inside live mammalian cells.
Using specialist tech, they engineer the cells to light up, or fluoresce, if the molecule they are testing stops a disease-causing protein within it from working. This way, they can quickly create a library of molecules that could potentially be part of new therapies.
“So, for example, if you know protein X is a driver for pancreatic cancer, you can engineer a pancreatic cell to fluoresce if the function of protein X is stopped, by the molecule you are testing,” explains Ali.
“The advantage of this method is that you can make and test a huge number of molecules very quickly, and because you are screening the molecules within a disease-relevant cell, you know they will function in cells in the body.”
A global force in drug discovery
Every journey has a defining moment. For Ali, it was choosing to work with us over a prestigious post in the USA.
“I chose Southampton because from the outset it was clear to me that I had found a partner for my career, an institution that would provide the facilities and support I needed to make my vision a reality.”

“Right from the start, the University has really backed me. I was able to have mammalian cell culture facilities built within the Chemistry department to further my research, which was unheard of at the time, in 2007.
“Even to this day, there are major universities whose academics can’t get cell culture labs built; their students have to carry their samples a couple of miles down the road to a facility. Southampton seemed like the kind of institution that would go that extra mile and would understand what we were trying to achieve – and they have lived up to that,” says Ali.
From starting as a two-person team – Ali and co-founder Dr Simon Kerry – Curve Therapeutics has grown into a global force in drug discovery. Since the company spun out in 2019, it has so far achieved a $1.6bn deal with Merck Sharp and Dohme Ltd (MSD), a major US pharmaceutical company and £45m of venture capital investment, including a financing round led by Pfizer Ventures, as well as creating 40 highly skilled new jobs in the Southampton area.
“The University has been fantastic, and its support was vital to help us reach the critical milestones needed to attract further investment,” says Ali, who continues to work as a professor here at Southampton.
A window into how discoveries are made
Here at Southampton, we have the entrepreneurial ecosystem and collaborative culture to enable our students to become tomorrow’s leaders. Undergraduate placements and hands-on experience with industry-standard science give a window into how discoveries move from the lab to the clinic.
These opportunities enable our students to see research translated into real-world impact, and some have even gone on to work for the company.
“We have several collaborative projects where Curve Therapeutics sponsors PhD students in my research group at the University to explore and develop compounds that have potential to be future targets for drug discovery,” says Ali.
“I’m really proud of how well we’ve grown the company into a team that’s making real progress in developing therapies globally, while continuing to support our academic group and students.”
