Overview
Up to 10 scholarships of £5,000 are available to new students starting a full-time, on-campus, undergraduate course in Physics and Astronomy.
The scholarship is renewable for up to 4 years of study, as long as you achieve first-class performance of at least 70% each year. You can receive up to £20,000 in total.

Eligibility
To get this scholarship you must:
- have submitted your application to study an undergraduate programme in Physics and Astronomy by Wednesday 13 January 2027, 6pm UK time (the UCAS equal consideration date)
- have a conditional or unconditional offer from the University of Southampton
- attend an online or in-person interview with the School of Physics and Astronomy by 15 April 2027
- be a self-funded student
- not receive external sponsorship if you're an international student

Your interview must take place before 15 April 2027
- Write and submit an essay
Write an essay of up to 500 words on a physics topic of your choice.
Your essay must be submitted no later than 7 days before your interview.
How we award
There are 3 stages to the shortlisting process.
- We score and rank your essay.
- During your interview, we will ask you questions about your essay to confirm that it is your own work.
- Applications will be assessed individually against the scholarship criteria and compared with all other eligible applications. The decision of the Head of School is final.
The top scoring 5 applicants will be awarded a scholarship.
The remaining 5 scholarships will be awarded to the highest-ranking applicants who meet Contextual admissions criteria.
This is a competitive process, and not all applications will be successful.
The scholarship panel's decision is final. We do not provide feedback on applications or decisions.
