Why I chose Southampton
I was very impressed by the lively atmosphere and friendliness of the students here. The professors and peers are all very supportive and I haven’t felt the toxic competitive environment here as I’ve heard from other universities.

The early exposure to clinical skills is really valuable and provides motivation for future years.
I’ve been part of the Sign Language Club, where I learned basic Sign Language, which is a useful skill to have as a doctor.
I also regularly attend the Muslim Medics and Islamic Societies’ events, which gives me a sense of belonging with the Muslim community.
My highlights
Going into the anatomy lab for the first time was a really interesting experience and I have enjoyed bonding with the residents on my healthcare support worker shifts.

Fahmia's top tip
While it is important to be organised early in the year so that you are not cramming before the exams, it is equally valuable to spend some time doing things that you like to de-stress. Since medicine is a long career and you will always be working hard, take it easy when you can so you don’t burn out.
