About
Charis specialises in Early and Primary Mathematics Education with expertise in the teaching and learning of early mathematics concepts, the development of mathematical reasoning and problem solving strategies, and children’s understanding and use of mathematical symbols. She also has an interest in researching the initial and continuing professional development of teachers. Charis has expertise in the use of qualitative methods within different research designs such as, case studies, microgenetic research, longitudinal qualitative studies, and phenomenography. She has supervised more than 10 doctoral research projects to successful completion.

Current research
Numbers in Everyday Life (NiEL) (2023 - Present)
The project involves a family-based programme of evidence-based pedagogical activities that aim to:
- Develop young children’s understanding of the multiple meanings and social uses of written numbers in everyday life
- Empower families to talk about numbers
- Enable educators and families to make meaningful connections between children’s experiences with numbers in everyday contexts, and their learning about numbers at preschool or school

City Shapes (Jan 2025 - Dec 2026)
This research project, funded by The Froebel Trust, aims to advance knowledge of preschool children’s 3D shape awareness through a Froebelian approach that involves:
- first-hand experiences of the children’s built environment
- examination of 3D shape awareness development in the context of unit-block play constructions, focusing on representing large 3D shapes from children’s urban environment.

Biography
Charis Voutsina holds a degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Patras, Greece and a Postgraduate degree (Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies) in Systems of Learning and Systems of Evaluation from the University of Aix-Marseille I in France. Charis completed a PhD in Mathematics Education at the University of Southampton. Following this, she was awarded an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship which allowed her to further extend her PhD research on young children’s problem solving approaches in mathematics and the processes of procedural and conceptual change that underpin the development of children’s problem solving strategies.
