Ms Sara Roberts

I am interested in practice-based teaching of curatorial skills and principles. I have a longstanding career as an independent curator and understand the skillset necessary for contributing to curatorial debate, at the same time developing opportunities for practice in the expanded field and developing new audiences.

I am Programme Leader for MA Contemporary Curating and Module Leader for both ARTD6212 Curator as Practitioner and ARTD6214 Dissertation: Final Project. I also teach occasional sessions for BA and MA Fine Art, and Postgraduate Research at WSA.

I am not currently taking on PhD students.

I have a track record, over 20 years, of projects which reveal the processes of craft: ‘Hand to Eye’ for The Winchester Gallery which documented, long term, six artists’ creative processes through film; ‘Setting the Scene: New Landscapes in Craft’ for Crafts Study Centre 2013 and a vast immersive installation, ‘Inundation’ by Laura Ellen Bacon, for Ruthin Craft Centre 2014. I was consultant curator for the Arts Council of Wales/National Trust Artists’ Residencies at NT Penrhyn Castle, 2015-17. In 1993 I curated The Chemistry Set exhibition, examining the impact of ready access to information about the patination of metals on studio crafts, architecture and wider culture, for Crafts Council and The Southern Arts Touring Exhibition Service. 

The 'What Colour is Metal?' International Design/Craft exhibition on colour in studio silversmithing and jewellery, co-curated with Dr Cóilín O'Dubhghail, National College of Art and Design, Dublin, was supported by Design and Crafts Council Ireland; Arts Council England (R+D grant); Sheffield Hallam University.

I have previously worked for Imperial War Museum, Mostyn and The British Council. I was involved in the Steering Committee for the inaugural 'Wales in Venice' (Official Collateral Event) in 2003. I was a Cultural Producer for mid-stage of the Southampton bid for City of Culture 2025.
