Biography
I joined the University of Southampton in 2017 as a Lecturer in Film Studies. Since then, I have completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PCGAP) and developed modules on Contemporary British Cinema, Film Audiences, Research in Film Studies, and Auteur Filmmakers. I was awarded an Excellence in VLE Award in 2021 for my Contemporary British Cinema Blackboard site. I have held several administrative roles, including Exams Officer, Academic Integrity Lead, and Admissions Tutor, and I am currently Director of Programmes (Undergraduate). I was promoted to Associate Professor in 2025.
I have an interdisciplinary background that spans both the humanities and social sciences, with a particular focus on film, media and culture. I graduated in 2001 with a first class degree in Geography from the Swansea University, then completed an MA with distinction in Cultural Geography at Royal Holloway University of London. I returned to Swansea University in 2003 to complete a PhD on the role of the Welsh Arts Council (WAC) in developing the visual arts in post-war Wales. My research was funded by a full AHRC Doctoral Studentship.
Between 2008 and 2010, I worked as a Research Assistant at the Centre for Cultural Policy Research, University of Glasgow, on an AHRC project about the history of the Scottish Arts Council (SAC). I then worked as a Research Assistant at the Centre for the Study of Media and Culture in Small Nations, University of South Wales, whilst also lecturing in Political Geography at Swansea University.
In 2014, I was appointed as a Postdoctoral Research Associate on the HERA-funded Mediating Cultural Encounters through European Screens (MeCETES) project. This three-year collaborative project between the University of York, University of Copenhagen and Vrije Universiteit Brussel examined the transnational production, circulation and reception of European film and television drama. I've disseminated the findings of this research through various journal articles, book chapters and blogs. This includes my book - Transnational European Cinema: Representation, Audiences, Identity - published by Palgrave Macmillian in 2024.
