Dr Gina Vale is a Lecturer of Criminology based in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Southampton. She is also an Associate Fellow of the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) and a member of the Vox-Pol Network of Excellence.
Gina's research takes a feminist, intersectional approach to terrorism and extremist violence. She primarily focuses on terrorist governance, genocide, extremist propaganda, and the roles and experiences of women and children. Her research and teaching is interdisciplinary, crossing areas of criminology, politics and international relations, gender studies, and security theory. Gina is the author of The Unforgotten Women of the Islamic State (Oxford University Press, 2024), and has published in the British Journal of Criminology, Terrorism and Political Violence, Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, Critical Studies on Terrorism, Small Wars & Insurgencies, Conflict, Security & Development, and the Journal of Human Trafficking, Enslavement and Conflict-Related Sexual Violence, among others.
Gina has briefed and consulted for the United Nations, UK and foreign governments, law enforcement, criminal justice, and the military on gender- and youth-focused considerations in countering violent extremism and post-conflict transitional justice. She is also a regular contributor to international print and broadcast media.
