About

John is a health data scientist whose research uses large‑scale electronic health records, person‑generated data, and advanced epidemiological methods to uncover how musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain, and other long‑term illnesses develop and evolve. His work has shaped current understanding of these disorders and their determinants, supported by more than 180 peer‑reviewed publications.

At the University of Southampton, he is Professor of Health Data Science, the Faculty of Medicine’s AI Champion, and leads the Health Data Lab. His research centres on applying transparent, high‑quality methods including causal inference, digital phenotyping, and remote monitoring to improve diagnostics, management, and prediction of long‑term conditions across primary care and population health.

His current programmes span NIHR and UKRI‑funded research into musculoskeletal disease, mental health, multimorbidity, long‑term symptom trajectories, and digital symptom‑tracking technologies. He co-leads the NIHR Wessex ARC Data and Technology Theme, advancing real‑world evidence generation and data‑enabled system improvement across regional and national health and care services.
