About

John is a health data scientist whose research uses large‑scale electronic health records, person‑generated data, and advanced methods to uncover how long‑term illnesses develop and evolve.

At the University of Southampton, he is Professor of Health Data Science, the Faculty of Medicine’s AI Champion, and leads the Health Data Science Research Group.

His research centres on applying transparent, high‑quality methods including causal inference, digital phenotyping, and remote monitoring to improve diagnostics, management, and prediction of long‑term conditions across primary care and population health.

His current programmes span NIHR and UKRI‑funded research into musculoskeletal disease, mental health, multimorbidity, long‑term symptom trajectories, and digital symptom‑tracking technologies. He co-leads the NIHR Wessex ARC Data and Technology Theme, advancing real‑world evidence generation and data‑enabled system improvement across regional and national health and care services.
