About
Dr Huanhuan Li is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering, University of Southampton, UK. She joined the University of Southampton in 2025.
Dr Li has an academic background in applied mathematics and maritime engineering. She holds doctoral degrees from Wuhan University of Technology, China, and Liverpool John Moores University, UK. She also holds an MSc in Applied Mathematics from the School of Science at Wuhan University of Technology. Prior to joining the University of Southampton, she held research fellow positions at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and Liverpool John Moores University, UK.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of maritime safety, intelligent transport systems, and green and autonomous shipping. She focuses on: AI-enabled maritime risk modelling and situational awareness; low-carbon and energy-efficient shipping technologies; maritime cybersecurity; port decarbonisation strategies; and the integration of clean energy systems in onshore and offshore maritime environments. Her work combines data-driven modelling, real-time prediction, and system simulation to improve maritime resilience, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
Dr Li is a reviewer for over 60 leading academic journals and has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles, including high-impact papers in Transportation Research Part C, D, and E, as well as Reliability Engineering & System Safety. She has contributed to multiple international projects across Europe and Asia, leading and supporting work in areas such as autonomous navigation, ship motion prediction, and green port operations.
In recognition of her research excellence, she received the Vice-Chancellor’s Rising Star Award in Research from Liverpool John Moores University in December 2024. Her research has been internationally recognised, including being listed among the Stanford-Elsevier Top 2% Scientists worldwide (2025).
Dr Li teaches in the areas of maritime systems engineering, autonomous systems, transport system control and modelling, and research methods.
