About us

We study how people perceive, learn, remember, read, and make decisions.

Our research seeks to understand the cognitive processes that support these everyday abilities, generating insights with applications in education, healthcare, technology, and clinical practice.

Our research examines:

  • perception and action (how people process visual, tactile, and auditory stimuli, from shape and colour perception to visually-guided action)
  • learning, memory and metacognition (how people gain knowledge, retain it in memory, and assess their own thinking) 
  • reading (the cognitive and behavioural processes active during reading, using eye movement recording) 
  • search (how people explore the environment to find targets, both on computer displays and in person)

Current research topics include:

  • how parafoveal processing affects the way we read
  • visual attention and 3D object recognition in biological and machine vision
  • how vision, touch, and prior knowledge work together to support object perception and interaction
  • developing novel methods for assessing visual and motor impairment in clinical populations
  • learning, memory and categorisation of information
  • visual search in both computer-based displays and real-world tasks

Our centre collaborates with national and international partners across psychology, neuroscience, computer science, and related disciplines in the UK and internationally. By combining behavioural experiments, eye and hand motion tracking, virtual reality, neuroimaging and computational modelling, we develop new insights into of human cognition and behaviour.
