SESA2030 2028-29
Advanced Aerospace Systems Design
The SESA2030 Systems Design and Computing module integrates practical and theoretical learning through lectures, tutorials, and hands-on prototyping exercises. It challenges students to collaboratively address mechatronic engineering design problems. This approach enables students to apply theoretical engineering knowledge in practical contexts while further enhancing their interpersonal and communication skills.
The core assessment for this module is a team-based, detailed mechatronic engineering design project. Students are given the opportunity to select their preferred projects in Semester 1.
These projects are designed to promote the application of Part 1 and Part 2 engineering and computing competencies within a single, practical engineering design project. Assessment milestones are distributed across both semesters, requiring teams to collaborate effectively under tight deadlines. Students must deliver both theoretical and practical prototyping solutions in engineering design and computing.
Student teams will defend their design process and final prototype during a detailed design viva. They will also demonstrate the functionality of their prototype in an appropriate indoor or outdoor environment. -

W.B. Yeats writes 'The Second Coming'. Jean Sibelius composes his seventh symphony. Paul Cezanne paints his tenth picture of Mont Sainte-Victoire. All three are clearly acting in artistically creative ways; but how should we understand what they do, what their creativity consists in? Is it a matter of inspiration? Or is it a matter of rationality? Or perhaps of self-expression? Or even of trial-and-error? Indeed, should we regard these suggestions as alternatives to one another, as if at most one of them might be true?
These are the issues that this module explores. Drawing on writings from Plato to Kant, from Nietzsche to the present day, the aim is to explain and assess some of the most philosophically significant answers to the question: What is artistic creativity? -

This module will introduce you to the advanced analytical laboratory and field skills required to be a modern analytical Earth and environmental scientist. The geochemical analysis of natural and anthropogenic materials is an essential part of many regulatory requirements and underpins many cutting-edge questions in both research and industry, from understanding our past climate, to monitoring of pollution, and finding new resources to power the green energy revolution. This course - condensed into a weeklong summer school - is a mix of local field work, lectures on analytical techniques and data analysis, and hands-on laboratory work using our cutting edge Geochemistry Laboratories (CERAS). By the end of the course, you will have the skills required to kick-start a career in analytical geoscience. -
