About this course

Gain experience in a professional engineering environment while learning how to design intelligent robotic systems on our robotics engineering bachelor's degree with an industrial placement year.

On this 4-year version of our BEng Robotics course, you'll learn how to design, build and program intelligent machines that can react and respond to real-world complexities. You’ll also explore how industries such as manufacturing, transport and healthcare are being transformed by robotics and autonomous systems.

This is about more than just building models and writing code; it is about taking part in hands-on projects where you can realise your ideas, develop robots, and run simulations and testing systems to understand how they perform beyond the lab.

After your second year on this course, you'll complete an industrial placement year – returning to the course with the skills and confidence to take your next step into a robotics career. The fee for your placement year is 20% of the standard annual tuition fee.

Spanning mechanical engineering, design, computing and artificial intelligence (AI), robotics is an exciting field where you can develop expertise in:

  • control systems
  • machine learning
  • mechatronics
  • programming

Throughout your degree in robotics, you'll learn in our state-of-the-art teaching spaces and multimillion-pound, high-spec computing labs. You will use our extensive robotics infrastructure, robotics simulation tools and 'digital twins' – virtual models of objects, systems or processes – and also have access to our materials and structures research facility as well as professional manufacturing facilities.

You'll graduate from BEng Robotics with Industrial Placement Year equipped with the skillset to design next-generation technologies that will inform how the world works, moves and interacts. Graduates will also have the tools and knowledge to progress into a wide range of robotics, automation, AI and advanced engineering roles.

In addition to our BEng Robotics courses, we offer an MEng Robotics course where students take part in a group design project, set by a real industry or academic customer. You can also take MEng Robotics with an industrial placement year.

We regularly review our courses to ensure and improve quality. This course may be revised as a result of this. Any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. Find out why, when, and how we might make changes.

Our courses are regulated in England by the Office for Students (OfS).
