Robotics with Industrial Placement Year (MEng) starting September 2023 for 5 years
Start your career in robotics while studying intelligent systems design with our master's in robotics with a placement year.
On this 5-year variant of our MEng Robotics course, you'll develop your expertise in the fundamentals of robotics, programming, mathematics and design. You'll then be able to specialise in an area of your choice, learn how to properly use machine learning and artificial intelligence, and complete practice-led modules where you can address real industry challenges.
As part of MEng Robotics with Industrial Placement Year, you'll take part in a group design project. Set by a real academic or industry or customer, this will be a hands-on opportunity to realise your ideas and prepare for a career in the rapidly evolving robotics industry.
After your second year on the course, you'll further prepare for a robotics career by completing an industrial placement year – giving you the knowledge and skills to take your next steps with confidence. The fee for your placement year is 20% of the standard annual tuition fee.

MEng Robotics with Industrial Placement Year's structure is reflective of how broad-based robotics is as a discipline, addressing core engineering topics while emphasising the application of these topics in robotics contexts.
Our master's degree in robotics focuses primarily on:
The first 2 years of the course consider the foundations of mechanical engineering among other engineering disciplines, sharing some content with our mechanical engineering courses. This fundamental knowledge is then supplemented by robotics-specific modules, helping you to contextualise these principles in robotics environments.
You'll complete an industrial placement year between your second and third year on the course. The University will provide guidance and support to help you organise this placement.
Following your industrial placement year, you'll return to study methods related to robotic perception, manoeuvring and control, including computational and AI methods. You can also explore a range of robotic application domains through dedicated modules and projects.
Year 4 offers several optional module choices, with which you can further explore specific key topics or application domains. We'll also increase emphasis on tackling real-world problems with your newly acquired robotics skills and knowledge.
We've designed MEng Robotics in accordance with the Engineering Council requirements as a pathway to become a chartered professional engineer.
