About
James Hall is a developmental psychologist specialising in the psychology of education. His research examines how educational, family and social environments shape children’s development, learning and mental health, especially where inequities emerge or persist. Alongside this substantive work, he leads a substantial research-methods programme concerned with improving how complex educational and developmental evidence is generated, analysed and interpreted. He is Associate Professor of Psychology of Education at the University of Southampton, Lead of the University’s Quantitative Methods in Education Group, and Deputy Director of the National Centre for Research Methods, where he contributes to research, training and capacity building in research methods.

Current research
James’s substantive research examines how educational, family and social environments shape children’s development, learning and mental health, particularly where inequities emerge or persist. This work spans early childhood education and care, home and family environments, educational effectiveness and opportunity, and child and adolescent mental health.
A second major strand of his research concerns methodology: improving how complex educational and developmental evidence is generated, analysed and interpreted. This includes longitudinal and secondary-data research, mixed methods, and the development of new methodological approaches. The two strands often intersect, including in work on selection effects and educational inequalities, pedagogical interactions across home and preschool, and methodological approaches to complex developmental and educational processes.
James leads research, training and capacity building in research methods as Lead of the University of Southampton Quantitative Methods in Education Group and Deputy Director of the National Centre for Research Methods.

Teaching
James teaches research methods and statistics across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes and currently leads Introduction to Statistics. His wider teaching experience spans psychology of education, child development, special educational needs, and quantitative and mixed research methods. He also contributes to doctoral researcher development and supervision across Education and related social science disciplines.

Biography
James Hall is Associate Professor of Psychology of Education and Deputy Director of the UK National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM).
James obtained a BSc in Psychology with Communications Engineering from the University of Bath, followed by an MSc in Educational Research Methodology and a DPhil in Education at the University of Oxford. His doctoral research examined the contribution of early education to vulnerable and resilient developmental pathways.
After his doctorate, James held research fellowships in Education at Oxford and in Psychology at the University of Warwick, before joining the University of Exeter as Lecturer in Special Educational Needs. He joined the Southampton Education School in 2017.
James is a Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
