About
Dr William Wu is Senior Teaching Fellow (Lecturer) in Underwater Acoustics at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
Having obtained a BEng in Underwater Acoustics in 2019, William moved to Southampton for further studies, where he achieved his MSc and PhD in Underwater Acoustics at the University of Southampton. William also held a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Fellowship under the EU-H2020-MSCA-RIBES Project (Grant Agreement No. 860800), and later became a Principal Investigator of research projects.

Current research
William's current research is closely related to underwater acoustics and bioacoustics, as well as supporting techniques, like signal processing, fibre optic sensing, and finite element modelling.
In addition to his doctoral project on fish swim bladder resonance characterisation, he is also working on underwater noise investigation and propagation modelling in geometrically complex underwater environments, like rivers and ports, together with Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), University of Portsmouth, and JASCO Applied Science, which an EPSRC grant has supported.
Moreover, he has been contributing to the development of acoustic-sensitive and thermal-insensitive fibre optic acoustic sensing technology, in collaboration with the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC), which also brought him to explore structural health monitoring using fibre optic acoustic emission sensors in extreme environments, with joint efforts with the Institute of Cryogenics.
