The Southampton Space Institute is dedicated to harnessing the world-leading research being carried out at the University of Southampton for enriching the space ecosystem.
We draw on the expertise of many groups including those working in the fields of engineering, aeronautics and astronautics, space weather, artificial intelligence, risk and resilience, and biomedicine in space.
Our high-level focus at this time includes:
- the use of quantum optics to revolutionise communications
- component miniaturisation for lightweight, compact satellite systems
- novel propulsion
- the intersection of artificial intelligence and data-driven space science
Institute members work with a large number of partners including RALspace, Airbus, Leonardo, the Met Office and many more.
Space South Central
We are also a key node for Space South Central, a partnership between academia and industry driving space innovation and regional growth.
We are partners in the Joint Universities Programme for In-Orbit Training, Education and Research (JUPITER). This is a collaboration with the universities of Surrey and Portsmouth through Space South Central. Designed to give students immersive, hands-on experience, it involves them directly in satellite missions and payload development, alongside industry and research organisations.
