Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

• Compare and contrast the evidence base for the care and management of the woman and neonate where variations occur during the puerperium, including relevant pathophysiology and pharmacology.
• Evaluate the impact of psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual factors on the decisions women make about their care, and the care of their newborn infant.
• Using a comprehensive understanding of the physiology of lactation, explore how the challenges of initiating and supporting breastfeeding in complex situations can be overcome to achieve the public health benefits of breastfeeding.
• Evaluate the role of the midwife within the interprofessional team in the provision of care for women with co-morbidities to the end of the puerperium.
• Demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to conduct the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination screening.

Application of relevant epidemiology, pathophysiology, genetic/genomics, psychosocial, ethical, legal and pharmacological aspects, with particular focus on the postpartum period for women and their neonates to the topics listed below. Interprofessional /inter agency referral and working is encompassed throughout the module. This list is not exhaustive but will include: Medical and surgical conditions Haemoglobinopathies Postnatal contraception and family spacing Postpartum gynaecological conditions including pelvic inflammatory disease Perineal trauma – including complications and long term sequalae Maternal/fetal/neonatal blood results Blood transfusion and blood products - including skills session Sexually transmitted infections Mental Health Conditions Pre-existing mental health conditions and their impact during postpartum period Postpartum depression Postpartum/puerperal psychosis Postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder Birth trauma Impact of mental health conditions and associated pharmacological treatment on breastfeeding Neonatal Conditions (includes support of the mother and family) Care of the sick pre-term infant Care of the sick neonate Low birth weight infant Neonatal jaundice Neonatal hypothermia Neonatal hypoglycaemia Neonatal sepsis Neonatal observations Neonatal orthopaedics Neonatal skin Neonatal abnormalities Care of the neonate withdrawing from any maternal medication/recreational drug Newborn and Infant Physical Examination Screening Neonatal screening History taking Communication Infant feeding - including supporting breast feeding where mother and/or neonate have complications Programme threads are linked throughout and include: Infant feeding principles Medicines management Reflection Mental health and well-being Values Based Enquiry Journey Leadership Coaching
