Module overview

This module builds upon the knowledge attained in the Antenatal and Intrapartum Additional Care Needs module to encourage you to consider the ongoing care needs of women with pre-existing or pregnancy-related additional care needs during the postnatal period. This module also links with the Obstetric and Neonatal Emergency Care module as you will consider the impact of obstetric and neonatal emergencies on the postnatal experience of women and families. This will include the physical care and emotional support provided by midwives and the interprofessional team during the postpartum period where additional care needs are required. In addition, this module will provide the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to perform the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination. By the end of this module you will have the knowledge and skills to enable you to contribute to the provision of safe and effective care for mothers and their neonates, with complex health challenges during the puerperium.
