Midwifery Elective Experience

Module overview

This module enables you to undertake a midwifery elective experience to aid in your professional development. This activity must be agreed/negotiated with the module lead to ensure it is: • in line with NMC educational guidelines for professional midwifery practice • covered by University and Faculty guidelines for elective/independent activity, including insurance and risk assessment • consistent with the educational commissioning of the programme • aligned with programme learning outcomes • appropriate to your professional development needs

Learning Outcomes

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

Reflect on and evaluate your learning from the activity and discuss the extent to which it has helped you meet the module aim, and how it will inform your future midwifery practice and personal and professional development.
Demonstrate the achievement of your learning objectives considering local, national and international policies and guidelines, which influence midwifery practice.
Demonstrate the ability to take responsibility for your own lifelong learning, including consideration of risk assessment, professional/legal requirements and multidisciplinary communication to achieve your activity.
Compare and contrast the evidence base appropriate to your identified development activity to justify your activity, developing specific self-directed learning objectives to support your learning.
Evaluate your own learning style and needs to facilitate your development as a competent and compassionate midwife, and in partnership with the programme team identify and plan your engagement in an educational activity to meet these needs.

This will vary depending on the learning activity undertaken and must be negotiated and specified within agreed learning objectives for the module with the module lead. Possible assessments include: •A presentation to tutor and peers •A professional conversation with tutor •Submission of a reflective essay •Submission of a report To pass this module you must achieve a mark of 40% or more.
