Bridging Continents: Dr Akumtoshi's Online Learning Journey

Published:

Dr Akumtoshi's journey began with a clear mission and initial uncertainty: "The purpose of choosing postgraduate degree was to upgrade my skills, understand research in depth, apply evidence-based research in practice, find out what the rest of the world are doing when faced with similar critical scenarios like mine. This would improve the quality of care in my unit, improving the overall morbidity and mortality."

However, he admits, "Initially I was a little sceptical about the online module, but to my surprise it turned out to be very useful. “I was working full time when I started the course and the flexibility of the module was of great advantage to me. Being self-paced, I did not have to stop working to complete my course."

What made the experience truly transformative was the quality of interaction and support. "The fact that the instructors are so approachable and knowledgeable has been something I always looked forward to. The way they approached a case scenario during discussions was something I learned a lot from."

"The lead for the MSc course was very helpful and prudent. My dissertation mentor was also very helpful and kind. I was also the member of the Staff-Student Liaison Committee (SSLC)  and we had a great time." This support created genuine belonging: "The course lead and all the tutors and dissertation guide were very helpful, friendly and kind. This definitely made me feel included in the UoS family."

The way they approached a case scenario during discussions was something I learned a lot from. The course have definitely improved my clinical acumen and developed an interest in research.

"Although my course was an online course, after completing the MSc course, I wanted to join for a clinical attachment at the Southampton children's hospital. I therefore applied for it and with the help of my module lead and the head of the Neonatology department, I joined for my Clinical attachment. It was a great learning experience indeed." During his clinical attachment in Southampton, he discovered more than just academic excellence.  "Southampton is a very homely place (even when away from my home) with friendly people around. It is a cosmopolitan city with all the modern amenities. It is a very safe place to stay, a home away from home."

Today, Dr. Akumtoshi has returned to India, transformed by his experience. "The course have definitely improved my clinical acumen and developed an interest in research. I am now back in India serving my people after the graduation."

"For someone who is unable to join the university full time, this MSc Neonatology course is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge, make friends for life and ultimately help improve patient care and save lives. Just join with an open mind and the learning is limitless."
