Immunotherapy

Module overview

This module can be taken as part of one of our awards (PG Cert, PG Diploma, MSc) or as a short course with or without completing the assessment. This module develops applied understanding of allergen immunotherapy across allergic disease with a focus on aeroallergen immunotherapy, food immunotherapy and venom immunotherapy. It also considers aspects of the development and implementation of immunotherapy services. The emphasis is on translating evidence and guidance into safe, practical decisions and implementable service components. This is taught once a year and typically involves approximately 10 hours of student engagement per week.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

This online blended module combines live interactive teaching with guided self-directed learning. Teaching is delivered through case-based seminars, protocol walk-through workshops (SCIT and SLIT), evidence appraisal activities and a service-design studio. Total student effort is 100 hours, comprising taught and guided independent learning and assessment. Independent learning includes directed reading, recorded micro-lectures, preparation for case discussions, structured evidence appraisal, and portfolio completion.

Assessment

Assessment strategy

The assessment for the module provides you with the opportunity to achieve the learning outcomes by demonstrating the depth and breadth of your knowledge of drug allergy, and your ability to apply this in clinical contexts. There is one assessed component which is based on a clinical case. The pass mark for the module is 50%. If you have failed the module, the Board of Examiners may offer you the opportunity to submit work at the next referral (re-sit) opportunity. The referral mark will be capped at 50%. If you fail a referral opportunity, the Board of Examiners may offer you the opportunity to repeat the module. The repeat module mark will be capped at 50%.
