About this course

The MSc Applied Statistics provides intensive training in statistical methods equipping you to analyse large data sets and solve real-world problems. You’ll build a strong foundation in probability, statistics, and data science, and then apply modern techniques to practical challenges.

Through compulsory modules, you’ll cover core topics such as statistical computing, data science, and fundamental theory. These form the basis for more advanced and specialised modules in areas like:

  • generalised linear models
  • Bayesian and likelihood inference
  • statistical computing with R/Python
  • compute intensive methods
  • analysis of complex survey data
  • modelling longitudinal and multilevel data
  • elements of data science foundations and supervised machine learning

As a student on this applied statistics master’s course, you’ll be part of one of the largest groups of statisticians in the UK and internationally. You’ll benefit from world-class teaching and research.

Our academics work across diverse areas of statistics and data science and collaborate with leading organisations. These include the United Nations and the World Bank, government departments, and National Statistical Offices in the UK and internationally.

Their research findings feed directly into the course content and include:

  • survey design, sampling and estimation
  • small-area estimation
  • analysis with integrated survey, administrative and geospatial data
  • statistical modelling
  • analysis of ‘big data’

By the end of the programme, you’ll have the expertise to tackle complex data challenges across academia, industry, and government.
