Module overview
This module will provide students with an opportunity to explore some key themes in imperial history, with a likely focus on the history and historiography of the British Empire. Topics may be drawn from any period in imperial history, from the beginnings of British/European overseas expansion, through mercantile empires, the age of global imperialism, to decolonisation and imperial remnants and legacies.

- To develop an understanding of selected themes or topics in imperial history
- To understand some key historiographical debates within the study of imperial history
- To develop knowledge of some of the sources and methods used in the writing of imperial history

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- write an analytical, primary source-based piece of work on Imperial history.
- analyse critically a variety of textual, visual and material culture sources on imperial history from different parts of the British empire
- engage with secondary literature on Imperial history, and contribute to the debates relating to the historiography of imperial history and its relationship to the wider world
Transferable and Generic Skills
Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:
- research historical questions and communicate your findings convincingly and concisely in written form
- locate and use effective textual, visual and material culture sources in the library and on-line, synthesising this material in order to develop cogent arguments
- utilise and develop your time-management skills
