Module overview
When a factory, a road or a piece of machinery is too loud, someone has to fix it. Noise control engineering applies the fundamentals of acoustics and vibration to reducing noise in real situations in order to meet given requirements. It is one of the most directly practical branches of acoustics, and the skills it demands are in constant demand across industry, construction and environmental consultancy.
You will learn how a noise control engineer works through a problem: setting appropriate targets, characterising and quantifying the noise sources involved, and reducing noise either at the source or along the transmission path. You will be given the relevant formulae and, importantly, learn what they mean and how to apply them, building the practical calculation skills the field relies on.
By the end of the module, you will be able to analyse a noise problem, set sensible targets, and design and justify a solution, then communicate it clearly to a non specialist audience. These are precisely the skills of the practising noise control engineer, and they prepare you directly for professional work in acoustic consultancy and for further specialist study in noise and vibration control.
