About
Joe is a Classicist and Ancient Historian specialising in Latin oratory and the politics, society, and culture of the late Roman Republic. His wider interests span the subdisciplines of Classics, especially philosophy and reception studies. Joe also produces scholarship of teaching and learning: he is currently interested in the potential uses of statistical modelling to evaluate students' outcomes and experiences in higher education, and in developing modes of oral assessment to enhance undergraduate courses in Ancient History and Classics.
Joe leads a range of courses across the ancient history syllabus, including modules on leadership in Greece and Rome, institutions of slavery, and the reception of the ancient world in the modern day. He teaches Ancient Greek and Latin language and literature, and coordinates a Faculty reading group for Latinists of all stripes and abilities – please get in touch if you would like further information.
Joe serves as the History Department's ECC representative.
