Research project

German-speaking emigres in British cinema: Reassessing Influence in British Cinema of the 1920's and 1930's

Project overview

To re-evaluate the contribution of German-speaking film personnel on the development of British cinema, and to reassess their legacy within the context of established national film histories. The focus is on the influence on major creative aspects of the filmmaking process such as direction, cinematography, and set design. Part of the project will be devoted to the transition period from the silent to sound film (1927-1932), and to the analysis of specific genres (aperetta, exile film), filmmakers (E.A, Dupont, Richard Eichberg, Gaza von Bolvary), and production methods (multi-language versions, cross-cultural adaptations and remakes).
