Research project

Maritime Britain

Project overview

Traditional narratives of Britain’s maritime history focus on notable events, prominent organisations, or well-known personalities. In contrast, the research is helping to transform understanding of this aspect of British history by focusing on the maritime and coastal communities that facilitated the country’s transition from a relatively insignificant polity on the edge of Europe, to a maritime superpower with global reach and ambitions.

The authors' work with Osiris-AI has improved handwriting recognition software. The outreach and educational work has influenced curatorial and museum-interpretation practices, informed and expanded pedagogical and educational approaches, and contributed to the co-creation and co-curation of new, open-access learning and interpretation materials.
