Student finance for asylum seekers

If you have an offer to study at the University of Southampton and have an asylum status that doesn't allow you to apply for our Sanctuary Scholarship, you may be able to apply for student finance. Here you can find information about eligibility criteria and how to apply, and contact details if you'd like to get in touch with our Sanctuary Officer for more information.

Whether or not you can apply for student finance depends partly on your immigration status, age and length of residency.

If you're not sure if you can apply, contact our Sanctuary Officer, Claire Giles, for advice at sanctuary@soton.ac.uk

Calais Leave, Stateless Leave and 67 Leave

With one of these immigration statuses you should be able to apply for Student Finance. You will need to share your immigration history and your eVisa Share Code.

If your 5-year refugee leave will end during your studies, contact our Sanctuary Officer for advice.

Humanitarian Protection

With Humanitarian Protection you should be able to apply for Student Finance. You will need to share your immigration history and your eVisa Share Code.

There is no 3-year residency test for this immigration status in the UK, but you must have been resident in the UK since being granted it.

If your 5-year refugee leave will end during your studies, contact our Sanctuary Officer for advice.

Afghan Relocations and Assistance Programme (ARAP) or Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS)

If you have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) through ARAP or ACRS, you should be able to apply for Student Finance.

You will need to share your immigration history and your eVisa Share Code.

Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

With ILR, you should be able to apply for Student Finance if you have been in the UK for 3 years before (and on) the first day of the first year of your course.

You will need to share your immigration history and your eVisa Share Code.
