The Institute of Medical Innovation (IMI)
The Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI) is a once-in-a-generation chance to bring the right people together, with the right technologies, to find the answers we are looking for.
Accelerating medical breakthroughs at Southampton
The University of Southampton is developing a new Institute for Medical Innovation (IMI): a pioneering space designed to bring together world-leading expertise across science, medicine, mathematics and engineering.
The IMI will support faster progress against some of today’s most serious health challenges, helping turn research discoveries into new approaches that can improve diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes.
At Southampton, our strength lies in connecting people, ideas and disciplines. The IMI will build on that approach, creating the conditions for researchers, clinicians, partners and supporters to work together on breakthroughs with real-world impact.
Tackling major health challenges
The IMI will focus on areas where Southampton research is already making a difference, including:
- Cancer
- Dementia
- Infection
- Respiratory and allergic illnesses
- Sight loss
By bringing expertise together in one purpose-built environment, the IMI will help accelerate the pace at which discovery can move towards patient benefit.

Supporting the Institute
We have committed £50 million to the £100 million project. We are working with our community of donors, partners and supporters to help raise the remaining funding needed to realise its full ambition.
Find out more about the Institute for Medical Innovation and how to support it on the IMI fundraising website.
The University will be holding a drop-in session from 9am to 7pm on Wednesday 17 June at St James’ by the Park, Shirley,133 Church Street, Southampton, SO15 5LW
