Mechanics, Machines and Vibration
Building on the principles of kinematics and dynamics introduced in the first-year mechanics module, this module examines mechanical systems in motion in greater depth. It covers the kinematics and dynamics of mechanisms and multi-body systems, as well as vibration phenomena in engineering structures.
Students develop and apply mathematical models and analytical methods, learning how engineers use fundamental physical principles to investigate complex machines and structures. Emphasis is placed on understanding the assumptions behind engineering models, interpreting their results, and using them to analyse real problems involving mechanisms, motion transmission, and vibration.
Laboratory classes provide a tangible perspective on the phenomena studied, including mechanism design, vibration modes, resonance, vibration isolation, and dynamic absorbers. The knowledge and skills developed provide a foundation for later study in areas including powertrain dynamics, control systems, numerical simulation and advanced design. -

Mechanics, Structures and Materials
This module covers the fundamentals of mechanics, statics, dynamics and materials. Providing a firm basis for all subsequent modules in these areas in later Parts and a further career in engineering. This module consists of four parts, Statics-1, Statics-2, Dynamics, and Materials.
Note: this module is only available to student taking degree programmes in the School of Engineering.
Pre-requisite - A level mathematics and physics or equivalent. -
