Eugen Stulz is Professor in Medicinal Chemistry. His research interests are interdisciplinary, spanning chemistry, biology, medicine and materials sciences. The main aim of his research is to develop modified oligonucleotides for therapeutic applications, with a focus on delivery and cancer therapy.

Current research
The Stulz Group develops new DNA-based molecules and technologies for applications in medicine, particularly cancer research. Our work combines chemistry, biology, and medical science to better understand disease and develop new therapeutic approaches.
Our current research includes:
- Using antibodies to deliver therapeutic oligonucleotides (short DNA strands) directly to target cells.
- Improving antibody therapies by attaching oligonucleotides that can enhance immune responses against cancer.
- Controlling gene expression by targeting specific regions of messenger RNA (mRNA).
- Developing new chemistries for DNA-based systems that could enable enzyme-free DNA replication and the discovery of improved aptamers.
- Creating non-invasive methods to deliver oligonucleotides to the lungs using advanced organoid models.
- Investigating unusual DNA structures, such as G-quadruplexes, as tools to influence the activity of DNA-binding proteins.
We work closely with researchers at the University of Southampton and with international partners, including the Centre for Cancer Immunology (CCI) and the European consortia OLIGOMED, ON-TRACT, and INT2ACT. Eugen Stulz is coordinator of the MSCA DNs OLIGOMED and ON-TRACT.

Biography
Eugen Stulz is Professor in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Southampton. He graduated with a PhD from the University of Bern (Switzerland) in 1998 under the supervision of Prof. Christian J. Leumann, working on artificial nucleases based on zirconium(IV) complexes. In 1999, he moved to Cambridge (UK) to the group of Prof. Jeremy K. M. Sanders, where he was working in the field of supramolecular chemistry and dynamic combinatorial libraries using phosphine-substituted porphyrins. During this time, he also held a part-time teaching position at Anglia Polytechnic University. In 2003, he moved to the University of Basel (Switzerland) as a Lecturer (Habilitand) with a Treubel Foundation Fellowship and started his independent research in the field of supramolecular chemistry using DNA as scaffold for multiporphyrin arrays. In 2006, he was appointed Lecturer in Chemistry at the University of Southampton, promoted Senior Lecturer in 2010, Associate Professor in 2014, and full Professor in 2026.
