About

Dr. Minmin Fu is a Lecturer in Climate Science in the palaeoclimate group at the University of Southampton. His research interests are in climate dynamics, including the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, tropical climate change, and palaeoclimate. His recent work has focused on hydroclimate and ocean circulation during the warm Pliocene, the most recent epoch in Earth’s history characterized by prolonged global warmth, as well as the stability of ice sheets during and after the Last Glacial Maximum around 21,000 years ago. He also studies deep-time palaeoclimate, such Snowball Earth periods, when Earth experienced extreme glaciations.

His work combines a hierarchy of climate models, including sophisticated Earth system models, intermediate-complexity models, and simplified "toy models". He also collaborates closely with colleagues who generate and interpret proxy records, both within and beyond the palaeoclimate group at Southampton.

Students interested in getting involved in research are encouraged to reach out. Those with a strong background in mathematics and physics are especially welcome, as are students with quantitative skills in Earth science, engineering, or computer science, all of which are highly applicable to research in climate science.
