About

Carlos Español-Espinel is a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton within the TAILWIND project. This EU–UKRI-funded initiative aims to accelerate the commercialisation of floating offshore wind by reducing the manufacturing and installation costs associated with mooring and anchoring systems. The project is an international consortium comprising 13 primary European organisations across eight countries. Carlos conducts research within TAILWIND, focusing on the design of innovative anchoring solutions to support commercial-scale floating wind farms. As part of his role at the University of Southampton, he is a member of the Centre of Excellence in Intelligent and Resilient Ocean Engineering (IROE), directed by Professor Susan Gourvenec.

Carlos began his journey in engineering in 2009 at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Geotechnical Engineering.

His career brings together extensive industry experience as a geotechnical engineer, and Research and Development undertaken during his doctoral studies. Carlos holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge on The Seismic Response of Offshore Wind Turbines Supported by Monopiles and Alternative Foundations in Liquefiable Soils. His fruitful research has led to the publication of several publications, including a journal paper in Géotechnique. In addition, Carlos was awarded the Philip Turner Prize for his outstanding contribution to geotechnical centrifuge modelling at the Schofield Centre of the University of Cambridge

In his industry roles as a Geotechnical Engineer, Carlos contributed to multidisciplinary engineering projects across a range of sectors, including offshore wind, transport infrastructure, oil and gas, and solar power.
