UOSM2041 Emerging and Resilient India
India is rapidly emerging as a global economic powerhouse, driven by sustained growth, innovation, and a vast and youthful population. Its demographic dividend is expected to continue for the next four decades before population levels stabilise as economic progress and social change reshape demographic trends.
India’s greatest asset is its human capital, an engine of creativity, entrepreneurship, and knowledge that can contribute significantly to global development. Understanding India’s complex dynamics through an interdisciplinary lens, spanning its economy, business landscape, ecology, and social transformation is essential to engaging with the opportunities and challenges shaping its future.
Taught by a dynamic team of academic experts, the Emerging and Resilient India module explores these opportunities and challenges through an interdisciplinary lens, using case studies, interactive seminars, debates, and multimedia resources.

The module explores the following key questions shaping India’s development and resilience.
- What defines the political, socioeconomic, cultural, and demographic landscape of contemporary India?
- How do climate change and population growth affect environmental sustainability and resilience in India?
- How has India’s economy and business ecosystem evolved since economic liberalisation?
- What opportunities and challenges shape India’s growth and investment in human capital and economic resources?
- How can the vision of Viksit Bharat be advanced through the UK–India Free Trade Agreement?
The module equips students with key skills in cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, independent research, global business analysis and frameworks, and effective research communication.
It is assessed through research blogs, data analysis, and case study scenarios, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding and applied skills.
Emerging and Resilient India course is coordinated by the India Centre with Department of Ageing and Gerontology within the School of Economic, Social and Political Sciences.
